Africa's classrooms reach for orbit, and every subject has a part to play.
From Houston to Cape Town
Space Center Houston has run the Space Exploration Educators Conference for more than thirty years. It is held at the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center, home of Mission Control and astronaut training.
Around 600 educators from across the world attend each February. For three days they work with NASA experts, astronauts and other teachers, and they go home with lessons they can use the following week.
SEEC is for educators of every subject. At least half of every session is hands-on, and the presenters are people who do the work.
In March 2027 it comes to Africa for the first time. SEEC South Africa is licensed by Space Center Houston: the same standard, run by South African educators, built around South Africa's own space programme.
It will run every year.

This is not just for science teachers. We are training every educator to use space as a context for learning, whatever they teach, because space needs accountants, lawyers, artisans, designers and communicators as much as it needs engineers.
The learners sitting in your classroom today will graduate into a world that needs space scientists, but also space lawyers, space writers, space accountants, space designers and space teachers. Most of them don't know the industry exists yet. Neither, often, do their teachers.
Africa is reaching for orbit. Your classroom is part of it.
Africa's space economy was valued at about $25 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $39.5 billion by 2030. SANSA reports that around twenty South African companies currently export $1 billion in space-qualified components and satellite systems each year, against a national target of $10 billion by 2030: a tenfold increase in six years.
The African Space Agency went operational in 2025, and more than twenty countries across the continent now run space programmes. SKA and MeerKAT have put South Africa at the centre of the continent's space ambitions.
